Nanjing Museum

南京博物院Nanjing Bowuyuan

One of China's largest museums, spanning Jiangsu archaeology, art, republican-era life and special exhibitions. Give the site About 3 hours (half a day for a deep gallery tour) if you do not want to rush. Check the gate before setting off, especially when the map pin covers a broad area.

How to book

China-local channel
Channel

Use the museum's official WeChat mini-program or the current official reservation entrance; do not treat a search result as a ticket.

When to book

The 2026-08-02 official check did not establish a universal release interval for every visitor type.

Booking steps

  1. 1

Open only the current official Nanjing Museum reservation entrance and select the museum's visit date.

  2. 2

Check whether the form offers a passport or foreign-document option before submitting any payment or identity data.

  3. 3

Save the appointment record and follow the museum's named entrance and security instructions.

What to bring

Bring the reservation record and the original passport; the cited notice does not confirm online passport compatibility.

If booking does not work

If the official page shows no current product, contact the venue or use its staffed service point; do not substitute an OTA as evidence.

Imported official reservation note

All visitors (incl. privileged visitors and their escorts) must real-name book. Tickets release daily at 18:00, bookable up to 7 days ahead (excluding the day) via the official WeChat mini-program, in morning (09:00–13:00) and afternoon (12:00–16:00) slots. Enter in your slot—missing it means refusal; the same document number enters/exits once per day, the same account books max twice in 30 days, and the same document max once in 7 days. Minors under 14 can't book alone—an adult must book the family ticket, with each adult bringing at most 2 minors.

How to visit

Start

Nanjing Museum main gate (south gate, No.321 East Zhongshan Road); large-luggage deposit is to the right of the main gate—store before the ticket check.

Finish

Finish Nanjing Museum with one slower gallery or the shop, then leave through the signed exit and check the transport note before heading back: Navigate with the exact Chinese venue and entrance; similarly named branches may be far apart.

  1. 1
    Stop 1History Hall

'Civilization of Ancient Jiangsu' general-history gallery—the main line of the 'one museum, six halls' concept; see it first.

  2. 2

Paid temporary-exhibition zone, including the museum's top-treasure show; buy per the current exhibition notice.

  3. 3
    Stop 3Art Gallery

  4. 4
    Stop 4Digital Gallery

    Interactive science-and-tech exhibits.

  7. 7
Stop 7Wenyuan Plaza / service centre

Rest and ask before leaving—the green-channel service window is here.

Foreigner notes

Passports and documents

Supported. Foreign-passport holders can book online themselves; on the visit day, bring the original passport + booking confirmation to the service centre's green-channel window to complete formalities before entry (the passport can't pass the turnstile directly—manual window required).

Chinese phone number and booking account

Booking is done via the official WeChat mini-program, whose account system usually needs a phone number; foreign visitors may try an overseas number or have a companion register. The site doesn't clarify overseas-number compatibility—test ahead or ask the service centre on site.

Payment methods

The free venue needs no ticket payment; payment methods for special-ticket purchases and mini-program bookings aren't detailed—usually WeChat/Alipay, with cash capability unverified.

Language and on-site communication

The official site is Chinese-only with no English visit rules; in-museum English signage and audio guides unverified—confirm English tour services via 025-84807923 before travelling.

Search the venue in full

Search 南京博物院 with its address rather than relying on a city-level result; the entrance is the useful destination.

Avoid these mistakes

1

Arriving without a booking gets you refused. Tickets release daily at 18:00 for up to 7 days ahead (excluding the same day) via the official WeChat mini-program, split into morning (9:00–13:00) and afternoon (12:00–16:00) slots; hot days sell out in seconds—set an alarm and be early.

2

Missing your slot means being turned away. Arrive in your booked slot—morning tickets must enter before 13:00; the same ID allows one entry per day, and re-entry after leaving isn't possible.

3

Foreign passports can't pass the turnstiles directly. After a successful booking, bring the original passport + booking confirmation to the service centre's green-channel window to complete formalities before entering—allow extra queue time.

4

Closed Monday, wasted trip. Closed all day Mondays (except statutory holidays), plus New Year's Eve and Lunar New Year's Day; check the calendar and latest official notice before going.

5

Mistaking special exhibitions for free. Permanent galleries are free; market-run temporary exhibitions/performances charge separately at the current rate—confirm on the 'Current Exhibitions' page before visiting.

6

Large luggage/prohibited items get you stopped. Store large bags to the right of the main gate before ticket check; controlled knives, lighters, combustibles/explosives and animals (except guide dogs) are banned, and halls prohibit food, flash and commercial kit like selfie sticks/tripods.
