The official page says individual visitors do not need a reservation; special exhibitions may have separate ticket rules.

When to book

No advance reservation is required for individual admission under the current official notice.

Booking steps

  1. 1

Open the official Shanghai Museum page and check the East venue and exhibition notices.

  2. 2

Go to 1952 Century Avenue and arrive before the 17:00 latest entry time.

  3. 3

Ask the entrance desk about any special-exhibition ticket or passport verification requirement.

What to bring

Carry the passport used for any separately booked exhibition; general individual admission is not reservation-based.

If booking does not work

If a special exhibition is sold out or changes its rule, visit the permanent galleries or use the official notice to select another date.

Imported official reservation note

Individual visitors need no booking—scan a valid ID after security. 'Wonderful China' and the Digital Gallery require a Special Reservation on the East Hall's booking page; groups of 20+ must book by phone 7 days ahead (021-20729998).

Foreigner notes

Passports and documents

Supported (the official English page states individuals enter with valid documents; passports are valid documents; during the booking-free period, scan your document to enter).

Chinese phone number and booking account

Not required (individual booking-free entry needs no phone; booking special projects like 'Wonderful China' uses the official booking page, and whether a mainland number is forced isn't specified).

Payment methods

Special-exhibit tickets buy online or at the on-site info desk; on-site payment methods aren't detailed, and online supports mobile payment.

Language and on-site communication

The official site offers a full English visit page and English guided-tour service; in-museum signage is bilingual.

Save the named gate

For Shanghai Museum East, save 上海博物馆(东馆) and 世纪大道1952号 in the map app; a broad venue pin may stop short of the visitor gate.

!

Avoid these mistakes

1

Closed Tuesday, wasted trip. Confirm your visit is Wed–Mon; closed Tuesdays (except statutory holidays).

2

Entry stops at 17:00. Arrive at the B1 east gate by 16:30 to allow security time.

3

Wrong entrance. Individual visitors use the B1 east gate (Dingxiang Road side), not the Century Avenue north gate (the group entrance).

4

Wanting the Digital Gallery / 'Wonderful China' without booking. Even in the no-booking period, these need a separate reservation on the East Hall's booking page—book before leaving.

5

Confusing it with the People's Square hall. The East Hall is at No.1952 Century Avenue (Pudong); the People's Square hall is at No.201 Renmin Avenue. Their open days differ—don't mix up bookings.

6

Special-exhibition tickets selling out. Check and buy target specials in advance on the official site/WeChat account.
