How to visit
Main gate at No.94 Guanqian Street (the gate faces south toward the pedestrian street and is the checkpoint for the paid courtyard). Guanqian Street itself is free; tickets are needed only to enter the Sanqing Hall courtyard.
Leave Xuanmiao Temple through the exit nearest the next street or temple district, not necessarily the gate you entered; check the return advice: Use Suzhou Metro, a licensed taxi or ride-hailing and navigate to the named entrance.

Go early after the weekday opening (per leads); Guanqian Street is crowded in the afternoon, so early mornings are calmer. On the 1st/15th of the lunar month and Taoist festivals (e.g. Sanyuan Festival) worshippers and ceremonies multiply—weekdays are more relaxed.

For Xuanmiao Temple, the usual crowd pattern is only a planning hint; check the day's notice and the queue at the gate.

Avoid these mistakes
Assuming the whole Xuanmiao Temple is free. Guanqian Street and the Xuanmiao Temple square are free, but entering the Sanqing Hall courtyard costs ¥10—so you can easily leave after the square and miss Sanqing Hall. Buy a ticket at the main-gate checkpoint and enter; the core Song-dynasty Sanqing Hall is inside.
The Five-Dynasties ancient well sits right by the checkpoint, and most visitors head straight for the hall and miss it. After passing the main gate, first look down at the old well beside the checkpoint (round on top, square below), then enter Sanqing Hall.
Ticket prices/hours may be outdated (the ¥10 price is based on a 2003 document; hours come only from Baike, and a second-hand lead of 08:30 conflicts with Baike's 7:30). Confirm the same-day price and hours via the on-site window or the official Xuanmiao Temple WeChat account before travelling.
Religious-site etiquette: photography is generally forbidden inside Sanqing Hall, silence is expected, and revealing clothing may get you asked to leave. Put away your phone/camera in the hall, dress appropriately and speak softly.
Fortune-tellers and hawkers pester visitors outside the main gate and in the square. Ignore them, don't engage, and enter the temple or leave directly.
Expecting 'garden scenery' will disappoint: Xuanmiao Temple is a Taoist temple, not a garden—the highlights are Song-dynasty architecture and Taoist culture. Treat it as a cultural stop in the Guanqian Street district, distinct from gardens like Humble Administrator's Garden, and combine it with Pingjiang Road and the Suzhou Museum.
