How to visit
West Gate/main entrance (Jiuxianqiao Road side; navigate to '798 Art District' or '798·751 Park'). The district has several entrances—both No.2 and No.4 Jiuxianqiao Road work; by car, leave the airport expressway at Dashanzi and use the south-gate parking building.
Finish near a marked pickup point rather than requesting a car from a narrow internal lane.

Best time
Arrive after 10:30 on weekdays: most galleries are not open before 10:00 and mornings are quieter. Weekends and exhibition openings are crowded.

Public spaces are open all day. Galleries and exhibitions usually run 10:00–18:00 or 11:00–19:00 (some close Mondays); performances are typically 19:30–22:30; cafés and restaurants about 10:00–22:30.

The district is free to enter without documents or booking. Paid exhibitions are ticketed per venue; foreign tourists can normally buy with a passport and are not subject to real-name booking limits.
No phone number is needed to visit the district. Only a few exhibitions that require online booking may ask you to register/log in to a mini-program; whether a mainland China phone is mandatory is unverified (recorded in uncertainties).
Galleries, shops and restaurants generally accept WeChat/Alipay QR payments, and cash is usually fine. Whether international cards are accepted is not uniformly verified; bring Alipay/WeChat or cash.
The official site has an English version (www.798-art.com and www.798artdistrict.com.cn both offer a Chinese/English toggle). The district is highly international—about 30% of visitors in 2025 were from abroad—and English signage/guides are fairly common; major venues like UCCA usually have English exhibition info.

Avoid these mistakes
Visiting on Monday morning finds many galleries closed. Plan for Tuesday–Sunday instead, and check the target exhibition's opening days in the 'Exhibitions' section of the official mini-program before you go.
Most galleries are not open before 10:00. Arrive after 10:30, explore and photograph the public streets first, then go into the galleries.
Assuming every exhibition is free can blow the budget at the door. Check the paid/free list in the official mini-program first; free exhibitions admit you with a 0-yuan order, and paid ones list their prices in advance.
Navigation addresses are confusing (entries at both No.2 and No.4 Jiuxianqiao Road). Search '798 Art District' or '798·751 Park' in a map app and navigate to No.2 Jiuxianqiao Road rather than relying on a street number.
The district is large with long walks and no shade in summer. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and sun protection; use metro Line 12 (Gaojiayuan) or Line 14 (Wangjing South) for the closest entrance.
Some special exhibitions require advance booking and are full on the day. Book tickets for paid specials 1–3 days ahead in the official mini-program.
