Capital Museum
Capital Museum gives Beijing history a local scale that the National Museum cannot. Start with the capital-city chronology, add folk customs and one art collection, and check temporary exhibitions before arrival because gallery rotations materially change the visit.
Verified ticket prices
- Official admission is free; use the museum's booking channel for timed inventory.
- No qualifying admission-only or clearly admission-inclusive international-platform product was verified. Use the official channel.
The Capital Museum's basic collection is free. After its renovated display reopened, visitors enter through the North Gate with valid ID after security and registration. Paid special exhibitions are ticketed separately per current notices (e.g. the 2026 'Great Civilizations of the Ancient Americas' exhibition offers a repeat-visit priority ticket).

Quiet just after opening on weekdays (9:00–10:00); avoid Tuesdays (closed). Evening hours run until 20:00 (entry stops 19:00), good for tourists whose days are full.
Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–20:00, entry stops 19:00, closes 20:00; every Tuesday is a fixed closure day (statutory holidays and special cases are separately announced).
Research checked 2026-08-12Foreigner notes
Passports are officially accepted IDs: the visitor guide explicitly says 'valid identity document' for registration, and historical booking rules (2019–2023 records) confirm passports can book free tickets and collect them with booking number and passport. Foreign tourists can simply register with their passport at the North Gate.
Online booking goes through the 'Capital Museum' WeChat account, which may involve a mainland China phone number. Without one, you can register at the North Gate on site with a passport (official guidance supports on-site registration), or call 63370491/92 for help.
The basic collection is free with no payment involved; paid specials are bought online mainly with WeChat Pay, and on-site cash may be accepted. International-card use is unverified.
The official site offers an English entry and multilingual pages. The museum provides self-service audio guides and human talks (mainly Chinese; whether English audio guides exist is unverified). Address: No.16 Fuxingmenwai Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, 500 m east of Muxidi Station on Metro Line 1.
The chronological gallery provides the framework for folk and art collections, making a selective route more coherent.
Avoid these mistakes
Arriving on Tuesday finds the museum closed. Tuesday is the fixed closure day (except statutory holidays); choose another day and check the official notice before travelling.
Entry stops at 19:00 and the museum closes at 20:00; arriving too late in the evening means being turned away. Reach the North Gate by 19:00 at the latest and allow about 2 hours inside.
Online booking and on-site registration coexist, and a failed online booking can make you think you can't visit. Official guidance supports registering on site at the North Gate with ID; if you can't book online, register directly at the North Gate—but confirm via the WeChat account first on holidays.
Large luggage and valuables can't be stored (valuables and dangerous items are excluded). Storage is limited to ordinary bags—keep valuables with you, and deal with oversized luggage before entering.
Assuming special exhibitions are also free can blow the budget at the door. The basic collection is free; paid specials are ticketed per notice. Confirm current exhibitions and prices under the 'Exhibitions' section of the official site before travelling.
Exiting Metro Line 1's Muxidi Station in the wrong direction. Walk east from Muxidi (toward Tian'anmen) about 500 m to No.16 Fuxingmenwai Street; navigate to 'Capital Museum' North Gate.

- The post-renovation visitor guide describes registering on site at the North Gate, while the official homepage still offers an 'online booking' entry; the relationship between the two (whether booking is mandatory, and whether walk-ins are admitted) isn't fully clear. — Before travelling, confirm the same-day booking requirement via the official 'Capital Museum' WeChat account or phone 63370491/92.
- The phone-number/passport field requirements in the WeChat booking flow are untested. — Try booking with a passport in the official WeChat account; if that fails, register on site at the North Gate.
- The exact name and hall location of the renovated permanent exhibition aren't confirmed on the pages fetched (the page only says the basic collection 'reopened to the public after a full renovation'). — Follow the lobby guide map or audio-guide order once inside.
- Whether the self-service audio guide includes an English version is unverified. — Confirm the audio-guide languages at the service desk in the museum.
