How to visit

Start

North Gate (visitor entrance) at your booked time; from Tiananmen East Station (Metro Line 1) exits C/D, pass security and walk to the museum's north gate. The northwest-entrance kiosk is the passport ticket pick-up point (requires passing Tiananmen Square security).

Finish

Leave enough time for security and the walk back to the subway.

Book the earliest weekday slot (9:00–11:00) and enter at opening—fewer people and you can see all the core displays; afternoons in peak season are the busiest.

Regular 09:00 opening, entry stops 16:00, closes 17:00; peak season (1 Jun–31 Oct) extends to 16:30/17:30 (the homepage currently shows 09:00/16:30/17:30). Closed every Monday except statutory holidays.

Supported: the official real-name booking system accepts passports; the English official site states non-Chinese citizens can get same-day free tickets with a passport at the museum's northwest-entrance kiosk (that entrance is on the east side of Tiananmen Square and requires passing square security). Entry requires the original document used for booking.

Chinese phone number and booking account

The official booking flow supports passport real-name verification with no hard mainland-China-phone requirement found; account registration usually accepts overseas numbers or email—follow the actual registration page.

Payment methods

The basic collection is free with no payment; paid specials support on-site purchase and online payment (WeChat/Alipay). No official statement on direct international-card payment.

Language and on-site communication

The official site has a full English version (en.chnmuseum.cn) with an English booking guide. The museum offers audio-guide rental (multilingual), self-guided tours (the officially recommended 'self-guided' service in summer) and paid human talks (bookable via pcticket.chnmuseum.cn); key signage is in English.

Choose three exhibition goals

A permanent exhibition, one object group and one temporary show make a realistic half-day. Add more only after checking energy and closing times.

Avoid these mistakes

No booking, no entry. The National Museum requires a real-name booking and sells no same-day tickets (even free ones need booking). Book 7 days ahead on the official site/App/WeChat account; tickets release daily at 17:00 and hot dates vanish in seconds.

Missing your time slot. The three slots are strictly separated and you can't enter outside yours; if you can't make it, cancel before 15:00 on the visit day (the cancellation still counts toward your booking tally), to avoid 3 no-shows triggering a ~30-day ban.

Wrong entrance or wandering into Tiananmen Square's long security line. The visitor entrance is the North Gate; if arriving from Tiananmen East Station exits C/D, follow the 'National Museum Visitor Entrance' signs and don't join the square's security queue.
