Ming Tombs

明十三陵Míng Shísānlíng

The Ming Tombs are a dispersed valley complex rather than one walkable compound. Select the Sacred Way plus one currently open tomb, confirm the transfer between them, and resist adding every site to a single half-day.

How to book

Passport route · assistance may be needed
Channel

Use the official visitor information first; foreign visitors can normally use a staffed window or visitor center with a passport.

When to book

Check before fixing the day's route; event and interior tickets may open separately.

Booking steps

  1. 1

Open the official information and check whether advance booking is required for your date or exhibition.

  2. 2

If no advance-only notice appears, take the original passport to the staffed ticket window or visitor center.

  3. 3

Keep the booking message, ticket or receipt and present it with the same passport.

What to bring

Original passport plus the official confirmation, QR code or on-site ticket.

If booking does not work

Do not enter a made-up Chinese ID number. If the form blocks foreign documents or phone numbers, use the staffed route or contact the venue before departure.

Half a day to a full day: about 2-3 hours for Dingling alone; about 4-6 hours for the Sacred Way + Changling + Dingling

How to visit

Start

Recommended: alight at Xishankou Station on the Changping Line, then taxi/bus to Dingling or Changling; or take bus 872 from Deshengmen directly to the Ming Thirteen Tombs (stopping at Dingling, Changling, etc.); self-drivers take the G6 Jingzang expressway to the Changping Xiguan roundabout and turn onto Changchi Road. First-timers should start with Dingling (the only tomb with an open underground palace).

Finish

Return to the same transport pickup after the final selected tomb.

  1. 1
    Stop 1General Sacred Way

Sacred Way: the stone archway, Great Red Gate, stone-animal statues and Lingxing Gate—a 1.5-km Ming sacred-path sculpture group; good for photos and feeling the axis start. Allow 30–45 minutes.

  2. 2
Stop 2Ming Changling — tomb of the Yongle emperor Zhu Di; Lingen Hall is China's largest surviving nanmu hall, with huge golden-nanmu pillars; the Ming Tower and Precious City are climbable

    Stay 40–60 min.

  3. 3
Stop 3Ming Dingling — tomb of the Wanli emperor; the only mausoleum with an archaeologically excavated open underground palace; descend to see the rear palace and excavated artifacts

    Stay 1–1.5 hours.

  4. 4
Stop 4Ming Zhaoling — a fully restored mausoleum layout with well-preserved Precious City and Ming Tower; fewer visitors

    Stay 30–40 min.

  5. 5
    Stop 5Kangling

Open (time permitting)—the Zhengde emperor's tomb, small but complete. Allow 20–30 minutes.

  6. 6
    Stop 6Yongling / Siling

(Paid guided booking required) Emperor Jiajing's Yongling and Emperor Chongzhen's Siling, newly opened in Dec 2024; meeting point is the Ming Thirteen Tombs visitor centre, gathering at 10:00 / 13:30.

  7. 7
Stop 7Thirteen Tombs visitor centre/museum—learn the construction history and excavated artifacts; a good rest stop before returning

    Stay 20–30 min.

Best time

Weekdays, enter at the 8:00–9:00 opening when it's quiet; avoid weekends and holidays. Summer is hot—bring sun protection and water; winter is windy and cold.

Foreigner notes

Select one tomb

The official ticket information identifies currently open components. One tomb plus the Sacred Way makes a coherent visit without excessive driving.

Plan transfers before arrival

The complex is not continuously walkable. Save the stop names and return timetable for every selected component.

Keep a time buffer after the last stop

Queues, security checks and internal transfers can take longer than the walking distance suggests. Leave before the final return-service window.

Check the live venue notice

The profile gives the normal plan. Recheck temporary closures, event controls, weather restrictions and last-entry wording on the official page before departure.

Use the named entrance

Copy the Chinese entrance name and full address into the map app; a broad attraction pin can be far from the visitor gate.

Avoid these mistakes

1

The mausoleums are far apart and can't be linked on foot; transport-planning mistakes waste hours. Decide your targets in advance (Dingling or Changling + the Sacred Way), connect by bus 872/Changping Line or taxi, and don't try to cover all open mausoleums in a day.

2

Treating the Sacred Way, Dingling, Changling and Zhaoling as one through ticket. Each mausoleum sells separately—buy per area as planned; peak/off-season prices differ, so check that day's ticket types.

3

Yongling and Siling have no on-site sales, so you find out you can't enter at the gate. You must book a paid talk-tour online in advance via the 'Ming Thirteen Tombs' Douyin account or the 'Changping Culture & Tourism Group' mini-program (Yongling ¥299/Siling ¥199); meet by session and book early as slots fill.

4

Peak season 8:00–17:30 but ticket sales stop at 16:30, so afternoon arrivals can't enter. Complete ticket purchase by 16:30 (peak) or 16:00 (off), and schedule morning visits.

5

The area is open-field mausoleum grounds—brutal summer sun, windy winters and slippery rain/snow roads. Bring plenty of water and sun/thermal gear; watch wet steps and the underground palace in rain/snow; in bad weather check whether official notices close the site.

6

Third-party 'Thirteen Tombs one-day tours' are overpriced and include shopping stops. Buy tickets directly via official channels (Dingling ¥60/Changling ¥45, etc.); consider a one-day package only if it includes transport, and check the itinerary for shopping.

Items to reconfirm
  • The official booking page doesn't describe a passport purchase/booking process; whether foreign tourists can buy online with a passport is unconfirmed. — Call the Thirteen Tombs visitor service centre or ask at the on-site window; check the official WeChat notices before travelling.
  • Kangling's open status and ticketing appear only in media reports (listed alongside Changling, Dingling and Zhaoling), but the official booking page doesn't list a separate Kangling ticket. — Confirm whether Kangling is open that day and its fare on the 'Ming Thirteen Tombs' official WeChat account or the 'Changping Culture & Tourism Group' mini-program.
  • Each mausoleum's hours may adjust by season/maintenance; the official site gives only a unified peak/off-season window. — Check the official 'Scenic Dynamics' notices or WeChat announcements before travelling.
