30–60 minutes just for the monument; 2–3 hours including the pedestrian mall and Bayi Snack Street; 3–4 hours if extending to the Hongya Cave / Qiansimen Bridge night views.

How to visit

Start

Jiefangbei pedestrian street (junction of Minzu Road and Minquan Road); alight at Linjiangmen Station on rail Line 2, or walk ~500 m from Xiaoshizi Station on Lines 1/6.

Finish

Leave People's Liberation Monument at Jiefangbei from the side closest to the next stop, then follow the transport note: Use rail transit plus walking or a licensed taxi, and navigate with the Chinese entrance name because Chongqing has major elevation changes. Walking the same lane back is usually the slow option.

  1. 1
    Stop 1The Jiefangbei Monument

The Anti-Japanese-War Victory Monument and People's Liberation Memorial—27.5 m tall, an octagonal column; view and photograph it from around the base.

  2. 2
    Stop 2Jiefangbei pedestrian mall district

The area enclosed by Minzu Road, Minquan Road and Zourong Road—shopping, flagship stores, night views.

  3. 3
Stop 3Bayi Snack Street on Bayi Road

Concentrated Chongqing snacks: xiaomian, sour-and-spicy noodles, chaoshou and barbecue.

  4. 4
Stop 4Guotai Arts Centre · Chongqing Art Museum

A free gallery; 09:00–17:00, entry stops 16:30, closed Mondays.

  5. 5
Stop 5Walk-on extension toward Hongya Cave

Along Minzu Road toward the river, 15–20 minutes reaches Hongya Cave / Qiansimen Bridge for the Two-Rivers night view.

Best time

Days are relatively quiet; after 19:00 the lights come on—the monument lights up and the district's night views are at their best, but crowds peak. Holidays (especially Spring Festival) bring traffic controls—avoid the 16:00–24:00 controlled window.

Foreigner notes

Passports and documents

Not applicable—free open public space with no ticket check and no documents needed. Paid venues inside the district (e.g. art museums) require documents per their own rules.

Chinese phone number and booking account

Not applicable—no booking/purchase step, so no mainland phone number is needed.

Payment methods

Viewing the monument itself has no payment step. Shopping and dining in the district broadly accept Alipay and WeChat Pay; international cards work in big malls, while street stalls mainly take mobile payment or cash.

Language and on-site communication

ichongqing (Chongqing International Communications Centre) has an English attraction page: https://www.ichongqing.info/attraction/jiefangbei-pedestrian-street/. Some malls on the pedestrian street have English signage, but there's no unified English guide.

Map the arrival point

Use the full Chinese name and address for People's Liberation Monument at Jiefangbei, then check the final walk from the drop-off point to the gate.

!

Avoid these mistakes

1

Holidays (e.g. Spring Festival) bring temporary traffic controls around Jiefangbei—bus diversions and vehicle bans. Check the latest notices from the Chongqing Public Security Bureau's Yuzhong Branch before travelling; during control periods (e.g. 16:00–24:00 daily, Feb 15–23, 2026) use rail transit.

2

Assuming everything around Jiefangbei is free and buying pricey 'observation' or 'river-cruise' third-party packages. The monument itself is free; the WFC Huixian Tower observation deck, Two-Rivers cruise and others are separate paid items—buy only via official channels and beware of street touts.

3

Shops in the district keep varied hours; some snack streets are quiet or shuttered by day. Bayi Snack Street etc. are liveliest at night; for daytime snacks check hours or eat in mall food courts.

5

The metro station has many exits and the district's streets look alike, so it's easy to go the wrong way. Navigate to '解放碑纪念碑' (the monument) rather than '解放碑地铁站'; save the Chinese address '重庆市渝中区民族路177号'.

Items to reconfirm
  • Prices for surrounding paid items (WFC Huixian Tower observation deck, Two-Rivers cruise) weren't individually verified, so no fixed prices can be stated. — Check same-day prices before travelling via the scenic areas' official accounts or platforms like Ctrip/Meituan.
  • No official 'open 24 hours' statement exists; the info comes from community guides. The public district is usually passable 24h, but shops close at night. — Go by the Chongqing government site's Jiefangbei page and the on-site reality.
