How to visit

Start

Zhongxing Road entrance: walk about 50 m down toward the lower city on Zhongxing Road, spot the small door marked '山城步道', then climb the stone stairs to enter the alleys.

Finish

Leave Mountain City Trail from the side closest to the next stop, then follow the transport note: Start near Qixinggang or Zhongxing Road and walk mainly downhill; route apps can misread vertical connections. Walking the same lane back is usually the slow option.

Best time

Experience the old-street businesses by day (shop hours), then reach a cliff viewing platform before dusk for the Yangtze sunset (per Yuzhong government copy: watch the rolling river and the mountain city's sunset glow).

Foreigner notes

Payment methods

The lanes themselves are free; shop spending in the area needs mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat) or cash, with foreign-card acceptance unverified.

Language and on-site communication

No ticket/guide fee; English signage and tours unverified—it's a local old-city block, best used with a map app.

Save the named gate

For Mountain City Trail, save 山城巷传统风貌区 and 七星岗街道南区路与中兴路交叉口东北50米 in the map app; a broad venue pin may stop short of the visitor gate.

!

Avoid these mistakes

1

Navigating '山城步道' as one attraction is wrong—it's an open old-street area where you can get lost in cliff alleys. Navigate to '山城巷' or '山城巷传统风貌区' (Nanji Gate subdistrict, Yuzhong District); core range: Chongqing Retired Cadres' Home to the north, Nanqu Road to the south, Zhongxing Road on the east, Shibangpo interchange on the west.

2

High physical demand: full of stone stairs and cliff sections. Wear non-slip shoes, walk downhill from high points (Zhongxing Road) to save effort; avoid noon in heat and mind wet steps in rain.

3

Assuming a free street means no spending (or the reverse) and getting drawn into paid experience items. The lanes are free; individual shops/shows/homestays charge separately—ask the price before spending.

4

Day/night experiences differ and shop hours vary. Main businesses run by day; save the river night view for dusk—too late, the cliff sections are poorly lit.

5

The area holds several heritage buildings (Houlu, Ren'ai Hall, etc.), and some courtyards may not open to the public. Go by the on-site fencing and signs; don't enter unopened areas.

Items to reconfirm
  • Whether there are paid galleries/shows (e.g. wilderness theatre) in the area is unverified; the lead asks to 'demarcate free public zones from internal paid venues', but no official paid-items list was found. — On site or Yuzhong District culture-tourism 023-63760006.
  • No official unified opening-hours statement; nighttime open boundaries unverified. — Observe on site or ask the district management.
  • Stop order is compiled from the Yuzhong district government copy and Baike; some courtyards' open status unverified. — On-site guide signage.
